-

Review: Velaiyilla Patthathari Director: Velraj Cast: Dhanush, Amala Paul, Samuthirakani and Saranya Rating: 8/10 CINEMATOGRAPHER turned director, Velraj impresses with this powerful comedy-drama dedicated to justice in the employment sector.

The film celebrates heroism among youth, with popular actor Dhanush leading the way for a group of determined engineering students at the centre of an inevitable cause.

PLOT

Raghuvaran (Dhanush) has been unemployed for four years after completing his bachelor's degree in civil engineering. His father (Samuthirakani) considers him a loser, as his brother Karthik is comfortably established in an IT company.

However, Raghuvaran gains love and support from his mother (Saranya) and girlfriend Shalini (Paul).

Determined to work only in civil engineering, Raghuvaran finally lands a job but faces an unexpected rivalry.

This situation forces him to stand up against all odds.

RECOMMENDATION

There is a prevalence of the bygone era of cinema culture in several aspects of the film.

While the plot is deliberately clichéd, the director treats the subject with a modern approach to keep it always gripping and entertaining.

The film is on a constant upscale in mood and pace after starting off on a slow note.

The actual detail of the plot takes some time to develop before properly surfacing in the preinterval period

There is a spectacular turnaround in the second half, with some significant twists in the character conflict.

Ultimately it is the powerful cast that keeps the events on constant edge. Dhanush’s mannerisms and screen confidence elevate the emotional content of the story.

His performance is fantastic as it delicately blends the diverse moods of a commercial entertainer.

Amala Paul makes a sizable impression in her romantic pairing with Dhanush.

Samuthirakani and Saranya are endearing as the parents. Vivek provides the necessary light-hearted breaks with his comedic act.

Anirudh’s musical score also deserves a mention for breathing life into some highly substantial dramatic points of the narrative.

RECOMMENDATION

As a fully-fledged “masala” entertainer, the film delivers an overall audiencepleasing outing.

It is sure to appeal to fans of Dhanush.
