Two in court over shooting

- JOLENE MARRIAH

TWO men linked to the shooting of a Pietermaritzburg grandmother outside her home appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Lindokuhle Majola and Brendon Mlawuza, both 21, face attempted murder and robbery charges relating to the attack on Vinothamoney Aiyer.

The 66-year-old heard a noise outside her Darjeeling Heights home on July 11 around 11:45pm and then investigated.

Aiyer apparently confronted the robbers by shouting at them from across her yard and they responded by firing three shots in her direction. Two bullets missed her but the third hit and penetrated her abdomen.

The men were arrested a week ago in a squatter camp in the Copesville area.

After receiving information from police informants, members of the Mountain Rise SAPS swooped on the alleged robbers and found them in possession of some of the stolen items.

Aiyer’s son, Wayne, said his mother was recovering in hospital.

“She will remain in hospital for another two weeks. I told her about the arrest and she was pleased the men were off the streets. She is also talking and making a good recovery.”

He said while they were pleased with the arrest, they were awaiting a conviction. “Justice must prevail.” Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the arrests. Police are still looking for one suspect. Majola and Mlawuza are in police custody until their next court appearance.
