Police weeding out drugs

- CLINTON MOODLEY

DRUG operations – and arrests – are ongoing in Phoenix.

A peddler and a supplier were arrested in Southberry Avenue at the weekend for being in possession of 20 pieces of cocaine. It is allegedly valued at R150 each.

The incident follows a string of drug operations in the area where guns, ammunition, drugs and petrol bombs were recovered from a home in Hemside Road, Caneside, two weeks ago.

Four suspects (Sebastian Pillay, 23, Kesavan Lutchmiah, 32, Anbanathan Sethasivan, 34, and Claude Jantjes, 37) were arrested during the raid and appeared in the Phoenix Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of drugs and ammunition.

They will appear in the Verulam Magristrates Court on September 2.

The Operational Commander at the Durban Canine Unit, Captain Fazel Rajak, said the unit was assisting the Phoenix SAPS with the drug operations.

“Phoenix is large and drug activity seems to be a huge problem in the community. Our narcotics team is assisting with the operations. We are not taking this lightly and will do our best to ensure drug activity is minimised in the community. Police are taking a stand against this issue.”

Rajak said their overall plan was to weed out the drug surge and prevent future drug related incidents.

Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said the two suspects appeared at the Phoenix Magistrate Court on Thursday.
