Getting HOOKED

-

THE Kingfisher is running its Biggest Shad Competition for August and September, with three prizes each month.

The angler who brings in the heaviest shad for each month will receive a Daiwa SL50SHK reel, filled with 600m of Kingfisher Giant Abrasion 30lb nylon, valued at R1 500. Second prize is a Kingfisher Poseidon Deep Blue 12’6” threepiece rod and a Kingfisher 1m aluminium sand spike valued at R1 000, while third prize is a Daiwa AG6000 shad spinning reel filled with 300m of Kingfisher 25lb nylon, valued at R550.

In the event of a tie, the first fish weighed in will take the prize.

All shad (fresh not frozen) must be weighed in during trading hours at The Kingfisher, 53 Hunter Street; Tackle Centre in Old Fort Road; or at The Fishing Tackle Shop in Warner Beach.

Angling all along the KZN coast seems to be getting better and better.

In the Richards Bay area many anglers who tried their luck at garrick over the last week have been successful. Anglers using live shad and mullet have been hooking into good fish.

Anglers in the bay have hooked into nice fish as well, using small live mullet. Tugela has been quiet lately until last week when garrick and kob came on the bite. Many anglers have had success on live baits and the odd garrick has been caught on plug too.

The Umhlanga stretch has fished well with shad being caught in large numbers. Most of these fish have been landed in the mornings but evenings have been relatively productive as well.

Blue Lagoon was also a hub of activity last week with shad and garrick biting at will. Shad have been more plentiful during the day and with favourable sea conditions forecast for the week to come, we can expect another week of bumper shad fishing.

The Durban piers and beachfront have produced hundreds of shad on baits and spoon. Grey sharks have been plentiful on red-eye baits and mackerel baits. There have been good reports of anglers targeting stumpies off the banks. Small grunter and shad have been landed regularly over the last week off the pier at Umkomaas. There have been a few smaller skates in the area as well and kob have been caught on McArthy Paddle tails.

Shad and grey sharks have been the main species around Scottburgh of late. Most grey sharks have been around 8kg and are proving to be awesome fun on light tackle. Most have been caught on whole red-eye baits.

Shad have also been on the bite in the Port Edward area and the only days where they were not so active were when fairly rough sea conditions were experienced. Large kob are biting as well and most fish are being taken on live shad as bait.

There have been excellent catches in Port St Johns of kob and garrick on live baits as well as McArthy Paddle tails.

Until next week then … TIGHTLINES!
