Moodliar ‘plays to unwind’

-

CLINTON MOODLEY A 16-YEAR-OLD Glenashley sportsman will ‘back his ability’ when he plays for the South African under 16 hockey team later this year.

Ohsai Moodliar, a Grade 10 pupil at Clifton College, was selected to play for the South African team after his superb performance in the inter-provincial hockey tournament two weeks ago.

His love for the game started when he was 11 years old. He was a student at the Virginia Preparatory School.

At first his choice to join the hockey team was more social than competitive. However, as he gradually got into the swing of the game, his passion for the sport developed intensively.

Soon, Moodliar was representing KwaZulu-Natal in the inter-provincial hockey tournament where his team took home several awards including gold for under 12, 13, and 14 between 2010 and 2012. The team also won silver in the under 16 category this year.

Moodliar said he played the game purely for fun and to unwind.

On making the national team, he said that he was excited to show both the team and his competitors his true potential.

Moodliar has since started practising for the big day which is yet to be announced.

“I want to make my mark and maximise this opportunity. Without the assistance of my coach, Dave Staniford, and my parents, Tharishan and Dhesari, I would not have been where I am today.

“I will continue playing hockey and hope to continue to compete in tournaments in the near future. However, I plan to further my studies and obtain a degree in the field of accounting,” said Moodliar.

When he is not on the field, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

The youngest of two sons said he needed to relax in order to play at his peak form.

“I particularly enjoy weekend getaways with the people I love. It provides me an opportunity to catch up with them and relax after a hectic game,” added Moodliar.

Ohsai Moodliar is the POST/ Supersport sportsman of the month for July.
