Killing angers Reservoir Hills residents

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH

THE fatal shooting of businessman Mubeen Shaik during a robbery at his Reservoir Hills home last week has empowered the community to take a stand against crime.

The local community police forum (CPF), security companies and the Sydenham police have been meeting to discuss ways to eradicate crime in the area.

Reservoir Hills CPF chairman Ish Prahladh said Shaik’s killing had angered residents and they were demanding that something be done to ensure their safety.

“Over the years, the CPF has been patrolling at the entrance of Reservoir Hills and just past the reservoir.

“We even had street patrols where cars were stationed at the entrance and exit points of the roads,” he said, adding this would be increased.

“Since the murder, crime in the form of house robberies and hijackings have been escalating. We are certain that there is a syndicate operating in the area,” Prahladh said.

“We have decided to host a mass meeting with residents next week and during this forum we will engage with the community about their concerns and how we are going to work as a team to rid the area of crime.”

Prahladh said a march against crime would also be held at the end of the month.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said no arrests had been made with regards to Shaik’s killing and the matter was still under investigation.

While he did not comment on the

MUBEEN SHAIK claims of an increase in crime in Reservoir Hills, Naicker said police were patrolling the suburb daily.

He said stop-and-search operations and roadblocks were conducted to curb serious and violent crimes in the Sydenham policing precinct.
