ROBBIE NAIDOO

-

AN AUSSIE relative has been badgering me about what all Australians are now referring to as a growing South African “choker” label.

He started his banter during that tragic New Zealand semi-final defeat at the Cricket World Cup. He continued after Kevin Anderson was two sets up and was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the quarters of this year’s Wimbledon.

He next knocked SA after Brandon Grace hit a ball out of bounds after sharing the lead with Jordan Spieth on the 16th hole at the US Open at Chambers Bay.

He then started knocking me after SA squandered a 1-0 lead in the ODI series against Bangladesh.

And he didn’t stop there, as Louis Oosthuizen botched up that easy putt at the British Open to hand Zach Johnson victory in the final playoff hole.

Thinking things could not get worse, he lambasted SA this week after their two

New York City vs Montreal Impact (HOME WIN) 1/1 – New York City have won five of their last eight games. Montreal Impact are without an away win in throw-away rugby defeats against Australia and New Zealand.

He says if I am an objective writer I should point this out and there is a distinct pattern.

I argued that in all these cases, probably barring the dour cricket performance, the South Africans all performed admirably, but he countered that no one besides the loser remembers a runner-up.

He asked me who finished second when Usain Bolt broke the world record at the 2008 Olympics. I couldn’t remember.

He says South Africans are in danger of being referred to as bridesmaids – like Namibian Frankie Fredericks, who hardly anyone remembers despite the fact that he has won four Olympic silver medals.

After analysing his comments, I must admit he has a point – or maybe SA is just going through a lean patch. I hope the latter.

But the point is, if SA continues to lose this way, it may their last four games, losing three times. New York City won the reverse tie 31 and are tipped for victory at even money.

Marseille vs Juventus (AWAY WIN) 6/10 – Italian champions Juventus have world class players at their disposal with the likes of Paul Pogba, Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata leading a team ask for some soul searching.

With the Fina World Champs going on at present, we can only hope that Chad le Clos can bring home a few medals and shut up my foreign detractors.

THERE were a few bright lights however, that stood out against the All Blacks. that is superior to Marseille in all departments. Juventus are tipped to oust their opponents at 6/10.

Paris Saint-Germain v Lyon (HOME WIN) 13/20 – Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon will lock horns in the French trophy on Saturday. PSG have won 10 of their last 11 games while Lyon have lost four of their last five matches. PSG have won four while drawing twice of their last seven encounters against Lyon. The home win is a banker bet.

While the commentators went on about Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel, I think the return of Heinrich Brussouw was the critical factor in this game.

Once again he proved to be the greatest menace to the opposition – spoiling and stealing through the entire game.

While SA did dominate, we

Until next week… TIGHTLINES! must not get complacent as the All Blacks held back Sunny Bill Williams and Dan Carter, two major cogs in their machinery.

The big question however, remains why the ref allowed for uncontested scrums in this game.

None of the commentators or SuperSport post-game analysts history of coming out on top in this tie. Chiefs’ makeshift backline could be exposed by the lethal duo of Kermit Erasmus and Lehlohonolo Majoro. It’s high time Pirates get a victory over their foes, and at 17/10 they are well worth a punt.

@ 37/10 seemed to be able to provide us with a clear answer.

FOR many it was a grand British victory as Chris Froome waltzed to his second Tour de France title this week.

But his victory is still mired in controversy – and allegations of doping.

The most cryptic statement

Friday, Fairview (Polly), this Friday, Race 4: MASTERLY(1) (1/1) – The Jet Master gelding Masterly has hit top form with a vengeance.

He has won his last two starts with consummate ease and looks all set to make it a hat-trick.

He is trained by top trainer Justin Snaith and will be ridden by Richard Fourie, who will soon be came from Mr Dopey himself, Lance Armstrong, who stated on Twitter: “Clearly Froome/Porte/Sky are very strong. Too strong to be clean? Don’t ask me. I have no clue.”

Until next time, happy sporting. leaving South Africa for Hong Kong.

He looks the bet of the day.

Arsenal vs Chelsea (AWAY WIN) 27/20 – Chelsea and Arsenal meet in the Community Shield on Sunday in an all-London affair, with both sides looking to notch a win and the first trophy available.

The Blues have had the better of the Gunners in recent years having won 10 of their last 15 encounters, suffering defeat on just two occasions.

Back Chelsea to reign supreme at 27/20.
