Crowning glory

- CANDICE SOOBRAMONEY

SOUTH Africa’s very own Shivani Govender did the country proud when she was crowned second runner-up at the Miss India Worldwide pageant on Saturday at the Lalit Hotel in Mumbai.

Speaking from Mumbai, the 22-year-old Johannesburg-based business analyst said she was over the moon.

“A few years back I didn’t even think about being a beauty queen. I believe that destiny has something planned for everyone and I feel truly honoured and excited,” said Govender. “Although I got extremely ill during pageant week and missed all the rehearsals and workshops, I am not coming home with the crown but a crown. It is one of my greatest achievements. I wanted to be the queen, the queen of hearts, so mission accomplished internationally.”

Govender described the contest as a once-in-a-lifetime experience that ended too quickly.

“Meeting phenomenal women from all corners of the globe and walking away being close friends was the highlight for me. The entire experience from day one was truly amazing. The life lessons and special memories are definitely for life.”

She was accompanied overseas by her dad Siva, mom Lalita, sister Premishka, uncle Satch Govender and aunt Manitha Govender. She will spend a few days in Mumbai with her mother and then tour New Delhi.

Asked what was next in the pipeline, she said: “Being on the international stage has opened many doors of opportunity. People from around the world have seen potential in me… But for now I would like to concentrate on taking my dance school to new heights.”
