Respects paid to Judge Mayat
HIGHLY-respected Gauteng High Court judge Haseena Mayat, 54, died on Monday of acute leukemia and chronic renal failure.
Gauteng Judge President Dunstan Mlambo said Mayat was hospitalised in early June.
“Judges, court management, court staff and members of the profession received the news of her passing with shock. Judge Mayat was a very committed jurist and had established herself as one of the pillars of the division,” he said.
“Her quiet demeanour, engaging discourse and decisive manner, particularly in tackling difficult cases, will be sorely missed…”
Mayat was appointed as a judge in 2009 by President Jacob Zuma. She had previously acted as a judge in the then Witwatersrand Local Division between 2005 and 2009. She was a practicing attorney at Mayat, Nurick and Associates until her appointment as a judge. Her family said theywere shattered by her death. “She was an exceptional woman who was incredibly generous and kind and took care of everyone around her. She was a workaholic, who was also passionate about her work and justice,” said a family member who asked not to be named.
