Killed, injured municipal workers: crash driver still not charged
THE unlicensed matric pupil who allegedly crashed his parents’ vehicle into municipal workers more than a week ago in Phoenix has still not been charged.
The 17-year-old son of a Verulam metro police officer is still being treated at the Mount Edgecombe Life Hospital, and is apparently experiencing blackouts.
It is alleged that on August 28, while the boy was driving his parents’ VW Polo, he failed to negotiate a bend and ploughed into four municipal workers doing routine maintenance along Tatford Road in Sunford.
Velenkosini Mpangose, 38, was killed while Kevin Roopnarain, 30, Thulani Chala, 35 and Aldane Scheepers, 30, are recovering in hospital.
Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said a case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving was being investigated. On the boy’s release from hospital, the court would decide what action to take.
