ACNE. Zits. Pimples. Blemishes. No matter what you call them, acne can be distressing and annoyingly persistent.

Acne lesions heal slowly, and when one begins to resolve, others seem to crop up.

Hormones likely play a role in the development of acne, making the condition most common in teenagers. But people of all ages can get acne. Some adult women experience acne due to hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, their menstrual cycles, or starting or stopping birth control pills. Depending on its severity, acne can cause emotional distress and lead to scarring of the skin.

The good news is that effective treatments are available – and the earlier treatment is started, the lower your risk of lasting physical and emotional damage.

In ayurvedic medicinal texts this disease is mentioned as ‘tarunya pitika’.

The etiopathology of the disease is considered due to vitiated blood along with vitiated Kapha and Vata.

Vitiated Kapha blocks the normal excretory function of skin and gets the waste material stagnated inside, producing symptoms like itching, pustules and nodule formation.

Vitiated blood also gets stagnated and produces multiple eruptions, redness, raised local temperature, thick bloody discharge from the boils and abscess formation. Then irritation, blackish discolouration and ugly scar formation is worked out by vitiated Vata. Remedies:

Grated cucumber applied over the face, eyes and neck for 15 minutes is very beneficial for both acne and blackheads.

Pound orange peel with water and apply on acne-affected areas.

Rub with raw garlic a few times a day.

Eat three seeds of raw garlic once daily for a month.

Apply a teaspoon of coriander juice, mixed with a pinch of turmeric powder, on the face after thoroughly washing it every night before retiring.

Use mint juice in a similar manner to coriander juice.

Make a paste of fenugreek leaves and apply over the face every night before going to bed. Wash off with warm water in the morning. This prevents pimples and blackheads.

Apply fresh lime juice mixed with half a glass of boiled milk.

Wet two tablespoons each of white and brown sugar and apply over pimples.

Saturate lettuce leaves in water; use this water to rinse acne.

Apply ripe tomatoe paste on pimples and wash it after an hour. Apply fresh mint juice every night. Wash the face with neem/ shringaberi water.
