Yahya, 7, is a soccer star in the making

- DEENA PILLAY

SEVEN-year-old Yahya Moola has been chosen as the POST/ SuperSport Sports Star for August.

Watching him on the soccer field, you will be immediately impressed with his ball control skills and ability to shoot at goal.

This was evident when he turned out for his school Hartley Road Primary at a primary schools soccer tournament on Saturday at the Al Falaah private school in Overport.

Yahya’s scoring ability is talked of fondly by his dad Muhammed, his school and club coaches.

Sports co-ordinator at Hartley Primary, Dawood Paulsen said of Yahya: “He has an eye for goal. His technical ability is very advanced for his age. He gives a good through ball and is well aware of the space around him at all times while he is on the soccer field.”

When not playing for his school’s team, Yahya plays club football for Avengers FC. His club coach, Junaid Mahomed, said: “He has been with the club for four years and has been one of our standout players during this time. Although he has a head for goals, he does not camp out in front waiting for the ball to come to him. He has the stamina to run back and defend when the need arises.”

Yahya has been the top goalscorer for his club for the past three years and even has a double hat-trick to his name.

Asked if Yahya was named after European-based international player Yayha Toure, his dad Muhammed said that Yahya was in fact named after a prophet in the Koran.

Young Yahya was evidently more comfortable on the soccer field than in an interview.

All he had time for was to cite his favourite team as Manchester United and his favourite player as Ronaldo, before running off to join his friends who were kicking a ball around.

Yahya goes through to the finals of the POST/ SuperSport Sportsperson of the Year which will be held in December.
