Winning laughter

-

LOCAL comedian Barry Hilton will perform Barry Hilton Live at the Golden Horse Casino on September 26 at 5pm. He has JOLENE MARRIAH giggling while answering her questions about comedy, his love for making children and why it’s good to laugh…

With over 30 years of experience in comedy, you have become a household name. What is your secret to sustainability?

I constantly re-invent myself. It’s also important to enjoy yourself and adapt to trends in the industry and to set your own standard very high, always maintaining your unique style.

What are some of the topics you are going to touch on in your latest show?

The only person who knows what I’ll be covering is the psychic John Edwards. I don’t work according to a scripted show.

What support do you get from South African audiences?

Huge support. I’m the biggest-selling resident SA comedian. Last week I did a solo sold-out show for 4 000 people. Please note this quote from the entertainment director at Big Top Arena:

“Never before has South Africa seen a comedian perform with an audience surrounding them 360 degrees. A huge arena set like this is almost impossible to work to a comic’s advantage – the energy has to be dialled so high to get the crowd going that no other South African-based comedian has even attempted what Barry has achieved!”

Why is it important to have a good laugh?

It’s far better than a good cry. And your eyes aren’t all puffy and swollen afterwards. Your stomach muscles ache, but it’s a good ache.

Tell us a little about yourself – where did you grow up and go to school, and what is your fondest memory of your childhood?

It was so long ago it’s hard to recall! I’ve been a professional comedian for more than 30 years. Before that I worked as an electrician and hated every minute. I was born in Zimbabwe, spent my formative years in the UK and we moved back to SA when I was 13, settling in Cape Town. My fondest memory from school is making the bullies laugh!

Do you recall the first joke you ever told – what was it?

No, only that I’ve been writing and telling jokes for as long as I can remember. I get a real thrill from making people laugh and it drives me to make even more people laugh.

Do you believe that being a comedian is a calling?

Absolutely. You don’t choose it, it chooses you. I also believe that Vodacom is-a-calling.

Do you recall your first time on stage – how did the audience receive you?

Yes I do. I got called up on stage in a pub. I did 15 minutes and brought the house down. It was at The Chelsea Arms in Wynberg.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Kite-surfing, wood-working and making children (I have six)!

Is comedy a full-time profession?

I’ve been a professional full-time comedian for more than three decades.

Tell us a little about your family.

I have six fabulous children and three wives. I’m in trouble with the quota system as they are all white.

Tell us five things about yourself that are unusual.

I have ADD. Next question, please.

What’s your favourite holiday destination and why?

Hong Kong. It’s a vibrant city and I keep going back for more.
