Upbeat Rainham Drums

THE Danville Sports complex in Virginia was abuzz with football action on Sunday when Safa Durban Central staged its season-ending Rainham Drums KO Cup matches.

The day’s proceeding­s started with Stella beating Westville Old Boys 2-1 in the Under 10 final. Westville bounced back in the Under 11 final with a 3-2 victory over Toti United.

Juventus cruised to a 4-1 result against Virginia in the Under 12 competitio­n while Amazulu’s 2-1 win against North Coast landed them the Under 13 honours, and Golden Arrows became the Under 15 winners by beating Juventus 2-0.

Gem Stars posted a 2-0 result against Westville in the Under 17 final and Villa Park beat Juventus 2-0 in the Under 19 final. SMI Ashtown claimed a 4-2 win against BOB in the Over 35 final, which provided the curtain raiser to the day’s main event.

Rainham secured a 1-0 result when they encountere­d Newlands in a fast and freeflowin­g Senior final. With teams still locked goalless after regulation time, the decisive moment of this clash came in extra time.

A defensive lapse allowed alert Rainham striker, Sandile Hlongwa, to score the winning goal.

Durban Central spokesman, Gopal Sanpersad said: “The finals was a culminatio­n of KO games which showcased the talent within the associatio­n.”

He thanked sponsor Julian Moodley for his generosity.
