Trials and tribulations take a toll
MATRIC pupils at Glenhaven Secondary School in Verulam find the biggest challenge in their matric year is the volume of work.
POST caught up with five pupils who have less than six weeks to prepare for the annual trial exams set to begin at the end of August.
Nivell Pillay, 17, of Brindhaven, said while he was coping, the workload had increased “significantly” compared to Grade 11.
“There is a lot, and while the work itself is not difficult, its the volume to get through. We have not completed the syllabus yet and trials are soon.”
Nivell said he was in the midst of preparing for these exams.
He said maths and physics tuition were helping to improve his marks.
Trey Jacobs, 17, of Osidisweni, may have only scored two distinctions in her last exams, but she is hoping to bag a full set to secure a place in medical school.
Trey also described being challenged by the workload.
“I feel it’s a big change from Grade 11. Because of time management, teachers advise us to keep a balance, but you have no leisure time.
“The volume of work consists of going to school, assignments and homework after school, extra classes and we still have to find time to study. I don’t even have time to sleep.”
Cindy Khumalo, 17, of Waterloo, described the year as highly stressful so far.
“There is pressure from school and parents who are expecting us to do well. But there is so much work, and time management has been challenging.”
Cindy said finding time to study, attend school and do homework and assignments had been challenging.
She has registered to write eight subjects. “I got five distinctions and hope to get all eight to get into medicine.”
Sarisha Goolab, 17, of Redcliff, lost her mother last year but she is determined to pull herself together and get all distinctions in the June exams.
Sarisha said the year had tested her.
“I am intent on studying chemical engineering.
“The only way I can achieve my dreams and goals is if I work hard, and I want to make my life better. My challenges have driven me to succeed.”
Nzuzo Zondi, 17, of Ndwedwe, has begun a study group with his friends to prepare for the trial exams.
“I haven’t figured out a strategy that works for me as yet. I’m lacking in time management.
“Physics, maths and IT are the most challenging subjects for me.”
Nzuzo said he found the workload had increased and there was little time to do it all in matric.
