Memorial Cup shines on

-

ENTRIES have been rolling in for Central Durban Golf Club’s flagship tournament – The Memorial Cup.

The 38th annual tournament is scheduled to take place at Durban Country Club on November 20. This event started with a handful of players and now attracts a maximum field of 120 golfers.

Initially called the Papwa Memorial in honour of the legendary Sewsunker (Papwa) Sewgolum, the CDGC continues to honour the late star, as well as others who paved the way for black golfers to make their mark in this country.

Central Durban Golf Club’s Sunny Singh said the Memorial drew golf enthusiasts from around the country, and it was to the credit of the Central Durban Golf Club and its band of dedicated officials, that the tourney had lost none of its sparkle.

“With the crème de la crème in the line-up, competition is expected to be tense in all divisions, and the club has ensured that those who excel on the day will be duly rewarded. Besides prizes to be won in all divisions, the overall winner will receive the coveted ‘Papwa Putter’ which was presented to the Club by POST Newspaper 38 years ago.

“The C Divison will compete for the coveted late Links Poonusamy Trophy. In keeping with the Club’s Social Responsibility Programme, charitable organisations will once again be receiving their dues on the day of the tournament,” said Singh.

He added that while the club honoured players of the past, they also saw the need to promote young talent.

“With the assistance of our major sponsor, Discount Build, Central Durban will be hosting a Junior Tournament in the new year. Our sponsors feels that we should start unearthing the future golf talent to continue with the legacy of the late Papwa Sewgolum.”

Singh urged those keen to participate to enter as soon as possible to avoid exclusion, as there are still some spots left. Contact Tony Pillay on 083 780 5403.
