Crematorium security plans

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH

PLANS to increase security at the Clare Estate Hindu Crematorium are being carried out after a group of mourners were recently robbed at the facility’s parking lot while waiting for the remains of a loved one.

The five relatives were held up by people wielding guns and knives and were robbed off their valuables.

The incident sparked concern and outrage. The police issued a statement calling for mourners to be more vigilant.

Now, a week after the robbery, crematorium trustee Thegrajh Kassie said the main concern was the well-being of the bereaved.

“Crime is everywhere and criminals can strike at any time.

“Although we at the crematorium have no control on when this happens, we are trying our best to create a safer environment for mourners.”

Security

During a board meeting on Saturday the trust decided to increase security.

“We will be adding additional security guards on the crematorium’s premises. During our busy times two staff members will be stationed at the car park to patrol.

“In addition, and funds permitting, we are looking to employ an armed guard who will also be based in the car park.”

Kassie said a broken fence, which gave people easy access to the crematorium, had since been repaired.

“With these security measures in place, we still urge mourners to be vigilant. Rather wait at the crematorium than in the parking lot.”

Police spokeswoman Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said that although it was an isolated incident, police were concerned.
