Kidnapped lensman alive – reports
THERE are unconfirmed reports that South African photojournalist Shiraaz Mohamed, who was abducted in Syria two weeks ago, is alive.
The founder of the humanitarian aid organisation the Gift of the Givers, Imtiaz Sooliman, said they have received excellent co-operation through connected people who, through their own individual research and networks in Syria, have confirmed Mohamed is alive and they know where the 38-year-old is.
But, as Sooliman has pointed out, the sources might be credible but at this stage, without proof, it is just their word.
The organisation has increased its efforts to find the Joburg resident, having created a task team to deal with the issue strategically.
Sooliman said Anas al Hamati, their hostage negotiator from Yemen, having previous experience, being an Arab and understanding the culture and language, was an integral part of the team.
Mohamed headed for Syria with Gift of the Givers to chronicle the plight of the wartorn nation. He was taken by armed men, allegedly due to a misunderstanding.
His ex-wife, Shirley Brijlal told POST this week that not knowing for certain was “completely terrifying”.
She said: “We now tend to overthink everything. Why did they take him? Where is he? How is he? We can only pray for his safe return.”.
Last week, the community of Lenasia South, in Joburg, held a vigil for Mohamed, the publishing editor of the Roshnee Gazette and Ennerdale Sun.
Brijlal said about 300 friends and well-wishers arrived.
“The community and South Africans in general, as well as the media and the Gift of the Givers, have been exceptionally supportive. At this stage, we need to hope for the best and continue praying.”
