Man killed for phones

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH

IN A BID to escape heavy rain Shiven Ramsunder took a different route home after work, only to be accosted by two armed men who murdered him for his two cellphones.

Ramsunder, 29, of Unit 7, Chatsworth had left a shopping centre in Unit 9, where he worked as a block man at a butchery when he was attacked last week.

His brother, Shaun Bunsee, said Ramsunder usually used the main road to walk home each day, but due to the downpour decided to take a shorter route.

“He sold his car a few months ago and opted to walk. He took the pathway behind the shopping centre because it was a quicker.”

Bunsee said his sibling was attacked by two men.

“They fired two shots at him, wounding him in the head. He died at the scene and the men fled with his cellphones. Workers at the centre tried to help him and contacted the police and paramedics.”

He said a relative informed him about the shooting.

“My father-in-law drove my mother, Shanitha, and I to the scene. When she saw my brother’s shoes, she fainted. I pushed through the crowd and identified his body.”

An angry Bunsee wants justice.

“We want these men caught and they must be given life sentences. They killed my brother for just two cellphones. Is that what life is worth today?”

Bunsee said the pathway where the attack occurred was a hotspot for robberies.

He said they were rallying around his brother’s wife, Raksha, and children Charice, 7, and Kaylee, 1.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said a case of murder was being investigated.
