DHS set for promotion

- DEENA PILLAY

WITH four fixtures remaining to complete the season, Challenge League cricket club DHS Rhythm is virtually assured of returning to the Premier League.

They remain unbeaten this season in the league with the only blip in their charge for maximum points coming last week when their match was washed out.

Top performer and coach of the club Abdul Razak is upbeat about the prospect of once again playing in KwaZuluNatal Cricket Union’s Premier League.

“Our players are pumped up and the level of dedication among them is amazing. Out of a possible 55 points we have 51 and this includes our washed out game. The good thing about the club is that our support structures, both in terms of management and players are strong,” said Razak.

“Our reserve team, which has lots of youngsters, has also turned up the heat and won their last four games. This bodes well for the club going forward.”

Razak also plays a vital role as leg spinner and top order batsman for the Rhythm.

He currently leads the league’s bowling averages with 35 wickets from 10 innings at an average of 4.06. He is also second in the batting averages with 353 runs from 10 innings at an average of 50.43 with a highest score of 86 n.o.

Razak, who is a cricket coach at Crawford – North Coast and who also runs the Razors Cricket Academy believes the majority of players at DHS Rhythm have what it takes to play in the Premier League.

“We will need just a few new players to boost the squad. However, players like Ryan Moses, Keith Stanger, Yunus Ally, Zeyaad Salot, my brother Azhar Razak, Shivesh Daya and Lisham Pramee will hold their own in the Premier League.”

Club chairperson Mags Reddy said the club had undergone a successful rebuilding phase after being demoted from the Premier League.

“The appointment of Abdul (Razak) as a player/coach has been a turning point for us. The players have responded well to his leadership style,” said Reddy.
