Donate blood at Foresthaven

- MARYANNE ISAAC

WHILE it is in you to give – blood, that is – sometimes a little incentive is all it takes.

At least, that’s what the organisers of a Phoenix blood camp are hoping, with a number of freebies on offer in exchange for a pint or two of the red stuff.

The Foresthaven blood camp is striving to reach a target of 150 eligible donors on Saturday, in a bid to also become the biggest blood camp in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Our motivation and dedication to this project is due to blood stocks being critically low. We are trying every possible way of getting the maximum donors to attend,” said Kreesan Naidoo, one of the organisers.

Naidoo believes that with the help of the community, they can save and touch the lives of many people with just a single gesture that takes no longer than 20 minutes.

“A single pint can save up to three lives,” he said.

“You’re always somebody’s blood type. We need you to help make every day Mandela Day and change a life as we build and strengthen a nation together.”

Donors and supporters can expect a cool line-up of music, fun and activities with lots of give-aways, as well as refreshments and lunch.

“As a token of our appreciation donors will receive a gift from the SANBS (South African National Blood Service) and, in addition, our blood camp team will be handing out gifts,” Naidoo said.

Donors can expect novelty gifts, trophies and medals, restaurant and takeaway vouchers, free car washes, hairdos, spa pedicures and even dental hampers.

“To entertain the kids while you’re saving lives, we have a jumping castle, face painting, balloon sculpting and party packs to keep them happy and smiling,” said Naidoo.

The blood drive will take place at Foresthaven Secondary School on Saturday from 9am to 4pm. Transport to surrounding areas can be arranged.
