Let’s have decency, please

-

YOGIN Devan (“Warrapen to our selfpride”, POST June 28-July 2), mentions only Indian comedians using vulgar language. Indian playwrights are also guilty of this. Their language leaves much to be desired.

There is an increase in “members of this once proud community belittling themselves”. Why is this so? It is because some community members have sunk to baser degrees. They have lost all pride and smut is now their appeal.

Why don’t comedians pick on races who pronounce Indian names in a peculiar way or pronounce words differently. Watch news readers, reporters and some politicians on television.

Devan questions “why the need to swear?” Some parents use crude and vulgar words in their homes as part of their lingo. Their children accept this as standard practice which they carry over to school. Some pupils cannot construct a decent sentence in English.

These parents are prepared to pay R150 or more to satisfy their appetite for depravity. Religious teachings take a back seat.

As for Bala and Peru, Tamil listeners objected to names like Pathma and Savithree. Why no complaints about the Kandasamys movie?

As for Aunty Sheila and others of her kind on Facebook, they talk nonsense and their language is disgusting.

Can we please have decent comedies and plays? DHAN SOMLAL
