Murugan family’s frustrating wait continues

- NADIA KHAN

THE family of Desiree Murugan, who was stabbed 190 times and decapitated, had hoped the four accused would be handed down lengthy sentences in the Durban High Court on Friday, but the case was instead adjourned to October pending a psychological report on one of the suspects.

Traditional healer Sibonakaliso Mbili, Thuso Thelejane, Mlungisi Ndlovu and Mbali Magwala, were convicted in January of killing Murugan, a sex worker, in 2014.

Her body was found by a municipal worker at the Shallcross Sports Ground.

A fifth accused, Falakhe Khumalo, confessed to his role in the crime and is serving a life sentence.

A psychological report on the female accused, Magwala, was ordered by Judge Thoba Poyo-Dlwati following conflicting statements during cross- examination between defence attorney Reema Mahabeer and Magwala’s probation officer, Mahashni Naidoo.

Murugan’s sister, Jennet, said they hoped the maximum sentence would be handed down to the quartet.

“Our family was satisfied when they were found guilty; justice had been served. But we are disappointed proceedings are taking so long,” said Jennet, who added the accused had shown no remorse.

“The female accused just sits there with no remorse. I believe she is of sound mind. She knows what to say and what not to say,” said Jennet, who added she was pleased with the probation officer’s report.

The report stated that Mbili had acted out of greed, but Mahabeer replied, saying it was biased and based solely on personal opinion.

The report, added Mahabeer, did not indicate Magwala was under duress.
