Bag of shows, movie for Riaad

- CHANELLE LUTCHMAN

COMEDIAN Riaad Moosa has a jam-packed year ahead with various projects running at the same time.

The second edition of Riaad Moosa and Friends – Heritage Weekend Edition will be held at Emperors Palace on September 23 and will feature some of the country’s biggest comedy heavyweights.

They include Dillan Oliphant, Joey Rasdien, Khanyisa Bunu, Loyiso Madinga, Muthu Murugan, Ndumiso Lindi, Robby Collins, Schalk Bezuidenhout and Simmi Areff.

The 40-year-old is also preparing for the last leg of his Life Begins tour, which will take place in October in Durban and Joburg, and he is also finalising movie deals, including the shooting of Material 2. POST recently caught up with him in Joburg where he spoke about the sequel to Material and some of his projects.

“Movies take a long time to do. So far the scripts are complete. We have been in talks with actress Carishma (Basday), who featured in Material, and others. At the moment the only issue we have is scheduling. This movie will follow from the previous one but it will be a couple of years later. It will feature the same old characters and some new ones,” said Moosa.

Speaking on Life Begins, Moosa said it was the last leg of the tour before he released it to the public on DVD.

“This show was my brainchild for the last year. It centred around me turning 40 and since then, for the year and a half, I have been performing it. We have already taped the DVD but before we release it, I wanted to do one last leg after these shows. It will be available locally and internationally but via my website and other online platforms, since DVDs seem to be a thing of the past.”

Life Begins will be staged at the iZulu Theatre at Sibaya in Durban on October 12 and 13 and at the Patidar Hall in Lenasia, Johannesburg, on October 27.

He is also working on a YouTube channel titled Best Medicine, a medical educational show utilising humour and creativity, to educate people on health and wellness as well as a comedy skit for Netflix.

“I shot the Netflix special at Just For Laughs in Montreal, Canada, three weeks ago. We are just working on the final edit and it will probably be released early next year, so I am quite excited about that.”

Tickets for Riaad Moosa and Friends, which is rated PG 16, and Life Begins, both made possible courtesy of Blu Blood, is available at Computicket.
