Into The Grey for ‘genuine nation building’
PLAYWRIGHT Ashwin Singh – recognised for his awardwinning productions – will team up with actor Menzi Mkhwane and screenwriter Rory Booth for their new play Into The Grey.
Directed by Ralph Lawson, it will be staged at The Playhouse Loft from September 13 to 15 and focuses on the association between activists Dr Logan Pillay and Advocate Sandile Ndlovu.
Set in the 1980s, Into The Grey portrays the struggles both men faced in their professional and personal lives.
Singh said the production explored the confrontations between various characters and exposed that South Africa was standing at the edge of a precipice but hope was in sight.
“Hope that we can still work together to find a better understanding and engage in genuine nation building. It is a wonder mix of action and ideas,” he said.
On working with Lawson, Mkhwane and Booth, he said: “You cannot find a more committed and talented group of artists.
“I am blessed to have someone of such rare and intense vision and skill as Ralph as my director and Menzi and Rory are awardwinning actors with great dramatic flair and emotional depth.”
While a number of Singh’s productions have been featured in Johannesburg, Cape Town, India and the United Kingdom, Into The Grey will be taught to students enrolled in the Master of Arts programme at the Autonomous University of Barcelona next year. Tickets at Computicket or The Playhouse box office at 031 369 9540.
