WHAT OUR READERS SAY . . .

■ Kelsey Pillay: I think women should not be afraid to feed their children anywhere. It’s a baby. A baby needs milk just like people need food. If people feel that a woman breastfeeding in public is indecent then they should stop eating in public because it is one and the same. Some breastfeeding moms should try to cover up but they should be free to feed their baby wherever and whenever they need to.

■ Genelle Chetty: (They should) feed their kids how they want to. They are not responsible for others sexualising a simple act of feeding their children.

■ Thiru Pather: Most retail stores put up posters (especially during Valentine’s Day) of women only in their underwear and people have a problem with breastfeeding in public. Go get a life. Some women walk around in public half naked. Nobody makes a big deal about this. Breastfeeding is done to sustain a baby and most women do it in public discreetly. Why should anyone have an issue?

■ Sarisha Ramdhani: I’m not a mom but I personally don’t think it’s a problem if moms breastfeed in public. I’ve known moms who have done this and covered themselves well to avoid any nudity being exposed. It’s a natural thing to do. It’s something special between a mom and the baby. And if anyone thinks it’s a problem, they need to re-evaluate their opinions on life. A relationship between a mom and a baby shouldn’t be judged, but rather appreciated.

■ Rikesh Ishwarlall: We are a people of different cultures and this is an important point in addressing breastfeeding in public. While it’s necessary to feed a hungry baby, covering up is appropriate as exposing a body part that’s generally always covered will no doubt attract attention.
