I am starting to lose hope in country

-

FOR the article “CPFs gives feedback on crime” (POST, September 12 to 16), I won’t betray my conscience by being mum on what matters.

Let us not be fooled by the latest crime statistics. All law-abiding citizens seem to be soft targets for criminals, who seem to enjoy immunity from prosecution and continue to prey on unsuspecting victims.

We as law-abiding citizens are desperately seeking safety and continue to erect electric fences and high walls on our properties.

South African society is disturbed by the spiral of crime against women and children, the hijackings, murders and violent house burglaries, which have escalated to untenable proportions.

Crime has become a way of life in our country. Are we becoming a society of degenerating morals? If we believe the old Chinese proverb “The fish rots from the head”, we need to ask which part of the fish we are. We need to start working on the rot by eliminating crime.

The judicial system is again in the spotlight. There needs to be serious intervention by the police minister.

Once this happens, all criminal activity will decrease tremendously.

The latest crime statistics must be carefully analysed. It seems that crime and criminality have become the norm in our country and the authorities do not seem to see a need to address the matter with any urgency.

For the first time, I am starting to lose hope for this country. Perhaps I am sad reading the national crime statistics with mixed feelings.
