People need to take responsibility for waste

-

POLLUTION from rubbish covers everything, from children dropping sweet wrappers in the park to giant pits in the ground being filled in by huge amounts of waste material.

A landfill site is a large pit in the ground that gets filled up with rubbish. A lot of the rubbish we produce each day is taken away and put into landfills.

Landfill sites are used as they contain the waste material in a small area and it is kept away from places where people live.

However, there are chemicals in the rubbish and these end up polluting the area around the landfill sites.

After we throw our rubbish away, it begins to break down into the various chemicals and substances it is made from. This is called decomposing. When rubbish starts to decompose, chemicals in the rubbish are released into the air and the soil around them.

One of the most harmful types of rubbish is plastic, which is making its way into the ocean and is having a negative effect on the oceans ecosystems.

Animals often mistake the plastic as food and eat it.

This can damage their internal organs.

There is a lot of illegal dumping in our country, with people dumping their building rubble and even their household dirt in our streams, stormwater drains and open spaces.

This is not healthy. I suggest the municipality put up “No dumping” signs on the areas that are effected. BRUCE CHINNIA Phoenix
