Curb child abduction
THE recent news headlines in Pietermaritzburg, regarding the plot to kidnap children and the arrest of a suspect by law enforcement officers, should serve as a caution to parents, community leaders and school teachers.
In keeping children safe from this very real and prevalent danger, we all need to be extremely careful and alert.
The arrest of Asif Mohammed has shocked the community and I welcome the arrest of a suspect and the ongoing investigation into this strange phenomenon of kidnapping innocent people.
The Hawks, Crime Intelligence and the SAPS need to be commended for acting swiftly and preventing an intended crime.
Child kidnapping or child abduction, or for that matter the kidnapping of a loved one, is one of the most distressing trials a human being can experience. Therefore, the suspect, if found guilty, should face the full might of the law.
Without creating fear or panic, we need to wisely educate and empower children about this strange phenomenon of kidnapping human beings and the dangers of taking lifts, accepting sweets, gifts and talking to strangers.
Please revise safety procedures with your child (especially those who walk home or use taxis) and if you see anything suspicious, report it to the school’s office and the SAPS.
Services offered by the police, like the School Safety Programme, should be embraced by all schools and used effectively. MOHAMED SAEED Pietermaritzburg
