Ameesha boxes her way to stardom
HAVING developed a love for karate at age 3, Ameesha Ramkelawan, pictured, continues to punch above her weight, both literally and figuratively.
Now 9, Ameesha of Newlands, has already competed on an international stage and is the country’s top ranked kata and kunite exponent in her age-division.
The Briardale Primary School pupil holds a number 2 ranking in the unison kata discipline.
This karate kid has also competed in two world championships, one of which was held in India.
Her father Pravin Ramkelawan provided some insight into his daughter’s affinity for karate thus far.
“The crèche she attended offered karate lessons and we’ve been encouraging her ever since. Amazingly, she is still undefeated in fights (kumite) even after competing in a higher age-division during the India trip.
“She trains four times a week for two hours or more,” said Ramkelawan.
Ameesha is a member of the Association of Funakoshi Shotokan Karate South Africa’s Newlands West Dojo, and was named as their student of the year in 2017.
Ameesha’s record nine medals across all competitions clinched that award for her.
She recently competed in the Karate South Africa National Development tournament in Tongaat and was placed first in kumite and individual kata and second in unison kata.
Her mentor Kiyoshi Selven Govender rates the youngster highly.
“She is a prodigious talent, always perseveres and gives off 100% in whatever she does. We are really proud of her.
“It is great to see youngsters interested in the sport,” said Govender.
Ameesha hopes to inspire other youngsters. “I feel blessed and honoured to be involved in the sport and really hope that I can be an inspiration to other youth.
“Never give up on your dreams,” she said.
