There have been mixed reactions to the new Bollywood release last week of
Thugs of Hindostan.
While critics have been scathing in their reviews, as expected the action adventure has already shattered the box office and recorded the highest day opening for a Bollywood release.
With Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan heading the cast, the multi-starrer that also features Fatima Sana Sheikh and Katrina Kaif in a fleeting and rather wasted cameo appearance is a simple story of revenge and rebellion.
Shot on a massive scale, this lavish production works as an action-packed and adrenalin-pumping epic.
Expecting a well-written story, high on emotion would leave to nothing more than disappointment.
In fairness to the film-makers, the movie was never touted to have a social message.
What it does deliver is high-octane action on the high seas, a bold step for the industry that becomes a visual spectacle.
Amitabh Bachchan yet again delivers a towering performance, while Aamir Khan is infectious for a character that he nails to perfection.
Fatima Sana Sheik, though good and fierce in the action sequences, needs to enhance her dialogue delivery. Overall Thugs of Hindostan is a smooth swashbuckling tale of escapism.
