The DA chief whip in the National Assembly, John Steenhuisen, and North Durban constituency head George Mari marched to the Verulam SAPS recently to hand over a memorandum regarding the high rate of murder, drugs and other crime-related matters.

It would be nice if our country could have elections more often.

It is only during this period that we see opposition political parties, especially the DA, waking from their deep slumber, staging protest marches about poor service delivery and going out on oversight visits.

For a couple of years now, Howick Falls, touted as a major tourism asset, has been taken over by criminals and prostitutes and is on the verge of ruin.

Staff at the immigration office at the Beit Bridge border post are struggling to do their work because of a lack of resources and outdated technology. As a result, people wait for long hours in queues to cross over the border.

Staff shortages, inaccessible roads and a lack of surveillance cameras in the area have contributed to Inanda police station being listed as having the highest number of reported rape cases in the country.

Just because elections are around the corner, we now find the DA visiting the border post at Beit Bridge, Howick Falls, Inanda police station and Verulam police station, showing concern and challenging the authorities to ensure a safe environment and that public amenities are well resourced.

Any political party that has the interest of the proletariat at heart would not just peak at pre-election times and coast along at other periods. This indicates that their activities are honed for narrow political aspirations.

The electorate must be wary of politicians who seemingly appear to be fighting for the poor and downtrodden, whereas their real motive is to garner votes for the upcoming elections.
