CASES OF MINORS’ IDENTITIES BEING PROTECTED

-

● "Zephany Nurse" made headlines when, at the age of 17 years and 9 months, the minor found out she had been kidnapped as a baby. The woman convicted of her kidnapping was sentenced to 10 years.

Fearing her identity would be revealed when she turned 18, she turned to the Child Law Centre for assistance. An urgent high court application resulted in an order being granted in April 2015.

Her identity will remain protected until all appeals, in the current case to protect child victims, child witnesses and child offenders from having their identities revealed in the media, have been exhausted.

● The court ruled that the older siblings of “Baby X” would be referred to as Child A and Child D throughout the trial in which they had been witnesses.

The Chatsworth toddler, aged 3, died in November 2014 after she was abused by her mother and grandmother.

Her mother was convicted and sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment in 2018.

The grandmother died earlier that year while awaiting trial in prison.

● The court ruled that the identity of a Phoenix child, referred to as "Baby G", be protected.

The child was allegedly abused by her mother and her mother’s boyfriend.

They were arrested after a video of the incident went viral on social media in 2018.

The child was treated in hospital for a month after suffering serious injuries to her hands, legs and other parts of her body.

The couple’s trial is expected to start this month.
