On the road to self-destruction

ANOTHER year has passed and planet Earth is slowly moving in a mode of self-destruction. It seems that many countries throughout the world do not realise that climate change and global warming are a reality and, if not contained, will ultimately destroy Mother Earth to a huge wasteland.

Unfortunately, the many factors contributing to this phenomenon are self-inflicted by mankind. A good example of global warming is the change in greenhouse gas emissions exacerbated by earthlings.

Deforestation, whereby millions of hectares of forests are destroyed, is mostly created by mankind and the recent raging fires in Western Cape and California speak for themselves.

Adding fuel to fire is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal. The waging of wars in countries like the Middle East adds to the destruction. It is said that icebergs are melting at a faster than normal pace which is leading to a rise in sea levels. This will encroach on the land. Then we have pollution which will ultimately threaten world security.

Plastic is destroying marine life. These are just some examples leading to climate change and global warming.

The world should move fast to plug this hole in a sinking ship or we will all go down together immaterial of how rich or poor you are . VIJAY SEWTAHAL Clare Estate
