Doctor’s killer awaits his fate
A JUDGE is expected to rule next month on whether convicted murderer Rajivee Soni can appeal his conviction.
In September, Soni, a father of two, was found guilty of killing Pietermaritzburg doctor Bhavish Sewram.
The Pietermaritzburg High Court found Soni guilty on six charges, including murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
In October, he was jailed to an effective 30 years behind bars and is serving his sentence at the New Hanover Prison.
Soni began his appeal application in the Durban High Court in December last year.
Arguments were concluded last week and the judge is expected to make a ruling on April 11.
If successful, Soni could apply for bail, pending his hearing.
Sewram, a father of two, was shot outside his surgery in Raisethorpe while seated in his bakkie.
Soni believed that his wife Kerusha, and Sewram were involved in a romantic relationship.
He enlisted the help of former policeman Brian Treasurer.
Treasurer, who was serving a life sentence, died in prison.
Hitman Mfaniseni Nxumalo is serving a life sentence and Sabelo Dlamini is serving 25 years.
Soni will be eligible for parole after serving half of his sentence, which is 15 years. Sewram’s family welcomed the sentence.
They told POST they had waited five years for justice.
