Mental assessment for suspect
A TOWN planner, accused of killing his former landlady, is expected to undergo a mental assessment.
Jithin Ramjaewan, 37, of Phoenix, was charged with the murder of Dhanwathie Fakira, 79.
Her battered body was found on the bedroom floor of her Arcot Place, Merebank, home on November 25. She also sustained multiple stab wounds to the face, neck and hand.
The grandmother allegedly revealed her killer’s name to relatives, who arrived at her home before her death.
During a previous bail application, he said he arrived at her house and found her in a pool of blood.
He, however, claimed to have left her home, after he heard noises around the house.
At the following court appearance, Ramjaewan abandoned his bail application.
In the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, his attorney brought an application for a mental assessment to be done by a district surgeon.
Ramjaewan was remanded back to Westville prison and is expected to appear in court later this month. | Nadia Khan
