Fraud accused back in jail
A PHOENIX man, accused of committing multiple acts of fraud in KZN, made a brief appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Ronaldo Chetty, 30, was arrested and charged with fraud after he allegedly conned a senior citizen, 72, into handing over her 50-year-old thali (sacred marital necklace) worth about R50 000, a cellphone and R700 in cash last October. The father of one allegedly approached the Durban North grandmother at the La Lucia Mall, under the pretence of knowing her son. He was arrested at his home a day later.
At an earlier court appearance, it was heard that he faced eight other fraud-related charges, using a similar modus operandi.
Last January, he allegedly conned an elderly man into handing over R2 500 for a parcel and two months later, was said to have conned an elderly woman of R200 and three gold bangles.
The case was adjourned for all the matters to be consolidated.
Chetty was remanded back to Westville prison. | Nadia Khan
