Coin theft case withdrawn
THE case against a Tongaat man, accused of stealing R2.2 million worth of Krugerrand coins and a Mini Cooper that belonged to his employer, has been provisionally withdrawn after the State requested a quote from the complainant to confirm the value of the items that were stolen.
The accused, Ramithlall Seusunker, 53, who is out on R10 000 bail, appeared before Magistrate Betty Rawheath at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court, where state prosecutor Musa Myeni requested a quote from the complainant, Naeem Joosab, Seusunker’s former boss.
The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Bob Pillay, from the Provincial Organised Crime Unit, said the State had a quotation handed in during the initial investigations but a detailed document was requested. Magistrate Rawheath provisionally withdrew the case until the document was provided.
The matter will return to the roll after this happens.
Seusunker faces charges of theft, motor vehicle theft, and defeating the ends of justice, for allegedly staging a robbery at Auto City, in 2017.
Two suspects, Mzwandile Mthembu and Wonderboy Kweyama, turned state witness after they were arrested by the SAPS Provincial Task Team. They implicated Seusunker in staging the robbery.
Cellphone records allegedly show Seusunker and his co-accused communicated with each other before and after the robbery, and no firearm was used.
It is alleged that 22 of the 200 Krugerrand coins were recovered from his home. The car has not been found.
On September 28, 2018, Mthembu and Kweyama were convicted and handed down a five-year suspended sentence, as well as a fine of R5 000. They paid the fine on the same day.
