Khan in hot seat

- VENAL NAIDU

NEW Hollywoodbets Dolphins head coach Imraan Khan wants to work with the legends of cricket to capacitate his technical team. The 35-year-old takes over the reins from Grant Morgan who has been offered a coaching job in Scotland. Khan, who played his entire domestic cricket career for the Dolphins, notching 333 caps, said taking up the head mentor role is a dream come true. “I am a born and raised KwaZulu-Natal boy and the Dolphins have been a huge part of my life growing up, so to be in charge is a massive honour,” said Khan. The left-handed batsman who played as an opener for the Dolphins, amassing more than 9 000 runs, expressed his readiness to invite former KwaZulu-Natal cricket greats to bring back glory days to the provincial franchise. “It would be great if we could have ex-Dolphins players in certain roles with the side throughout the season. “They have been such great servants for the game in this province and they understand what this franchise is about, so if we could harness that it would add another dimension to our side,” he explained. Khan served as the assistant coach to Morgan for two and a half seasons and is grateful for his guidance. “Morgs is a terrific coach, I have learnt so much from him in the time that we worked together,” he added. Chief executive of KZN Cricket, Heinrich Strydom, is confident that Khan is the man for the position and will be a good mentor for the side going into the new season. “Immy had an admirable playing career, lots of experience in leadership roles and a strong start to his coaching career. “We, therefore, felt he was the right man to take up the position,” said Strydom. Khan’s first task as coach will be against the Multiply Titans on October 7 in the CSA 4-Day Franchise Series in Pretoria.
