Here’s to Gujarat heritage

- LATOYA NEWMAN

A CELEBRATION of the Gujarat culture with a touch of modernity will take centre stage at The Playhouse this week.

The dance and music production, Gujarat My Heritage, which traces the history and heritage of Gujarat, will be staged on Saturday at 7.30pm.

Publicist, Hetesh Daya, said the production was written by Tara Devjee. She also choreographed most of the dance items with other local choreographers.

“The show boasts an array of dancing formats, from classical to traditional Gujarati and modern dance,” he said.

“It has been a dream of Tara’s to create a production that showcases the culture and lifestyle of Gujarati people. The elegant dance, tasty food, and rich culture makes it stand out from other Hindu cultures.”

Within the South African, and particularly the Durban, context, Daya explained the significance of the show: “In a census taken in 2011, Indians formed 2.5% of the population in South Africa.

“That was just under 1.3 million people. Of that, there are so many different cultures and faiths in Hinduism. “Gujaratis comprise about 5 000 of the Indian community in Durban. This production was created to, therefore, showcase one of the many Hindu cultures.”

He added that the state of Gujarat in India was home to a multitude of captivating, bright and vibrant festivals and encouraged other communities to learn about this particular one via the production.

With a blend of arts, culture, and lifestyle, Gujarat, My Heritage will celebrate what being a Gujarati is all about.
