Spurs in a spot of bother

- ESHLIN VEDAN eshlin.vedan@inl.co.za

THE big talking point from match day 8 of the Premier League season has to have been Tottenham’s woeful performance during their 3-0 loss against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The North Londoners were unable to recover from their 7-2 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week.

They now appear to be the weakest they have been since Mauricio Pochettino took charge of the club in 2014.

Should this level of performance persist, it is easy to see the Argentinian walking away from the club.

He has done well at the helm in spite of having had to work with considerably less financial backing compared with the other giants of English football.

Spurs’ defence is looking wobbly at the moment and they may regret having sold right-back Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid without recruiting a suitable replacement.

Liverpool maintained their 100% win record with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Leicester City.

Reds captain Jordan Henderson won the match for his side by slotting home a penalty with virtually the last kick of the game.

The title is now Jurgen Klopp’s side’s to lose.

The Merseysiders have an eight-point lead over second-placed Manchester City who fell to a shock 2-0 defeat against a

resurgent Wolves side.

Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United on Sunday after Matthew Longstaff scored the only goal of the game.

The Red Devils are struggling and the result left them in 12th position on the League standings with just nine points after eight games.

Everton moved into the relegation zone following their 1-0 defeat against Burnley.

The Toffees are one of only a few clubs that have never been relegated from the English Premier League, and if manager Marco Silva fails to steer the club out of danger soon, he most likely will be sacked.

Chelsea recorded an impressive 4-1 away victory against Southampton. Despite this, Frank Lampard’s side will not be trophy contenders this season.

However, the Blues manager has so far been doing an impressive job at the helm of the club since taking over, particularly with regards to getting the best out of youngsters.

Chelsea are a club which historically have a poor reputation in terms of treating young talent well.

Lampard has, however, identified, and is currently developing, three future stars in Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori.

In a surprise result, Aston Villa managed to record a 5-1 away victory against Norwich City.

The Canaries would have gone into the game as favourites considering that they recorded a shock win against Manchester City earlier this season and were playing at home.

Dean Smith’s side also had a below par start to the season, but the victory may give them confidence as they look to achieve their mandate of avoiding relegation this season.

Watford remain the only side without a win in the division after playing out to a 0-0 stalemate against Sheffield United at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

There will be no Premier League action this weekend owing to the international break.

Match day 9 will commence on Saturday, October 19.
