Moonsamy takes Prikesh to the movies

New release from Keru Kisten and Sans Moonsamy

- LEAH DENNIS

POWER couple Keru Kisten and Sans Moonsamy are back with a new film, Who’s My Daddy?

They previously released Red Room, featuring Khanyi Mbau and Kenneth Marawa.

For their new venture, the couple co-wrote the script, while Moonsamy and David Kau helmed the directors’ seats. The film, said Kisten, was inspired by one of Moonsamy’s stage characters, Prikesh Nair.

“After 15 years of performing as Prikesh, we decided he needed a movie. The character is hilarious,” said Kisten.

Moonsamy reprises his role as Prikesh for the film, produced by Sandman Productions.

Speaking about the plot, Kisten said: “Prikesh did not perform well on a comedy show and he is at the lowest point in his life. He then meets an agent, Alfie (Alfred Ntombela), and news reporter Emma (Nadia Jaftha). They decide it is time Prikesh finds his father. The audience is then taken on a crazy tangent filled with humour.”

Kisten dubbed the movie an all good, feel-good South Africa film.

It features Mbau, Logie Naidoo and Bash with Tash (Natasha Portrag).

Filming began last October in Johannesburg and Durban and it is expected to be released nationwide this year.

Kisten is fast becoming a force on the South African movie-making scene.

We asked her where her passion for films was rooted.

“As a child, I knew this is what I wanted to do. I wanted to be in front of the lens and now I love being behind the lens in the producer and director seats.

“I actually got into film-making after a director asked me to be a couch actress (where directors and filmmakers take undue advantage of aspiring actors or actresses).

“I remember walking away feeling defeated. I promised myself that I would not be put in that position again. I am now in a position where I can create films and ensure people are not taken advantage of.”

Kisten hopes Who’s My Daddy?

encourages others to be proudly South

African.

“I want people to love being South African. The film’s music is proudly South African and the audience is in for a surprise when the film releases.”

She advised aspiring film-makers to never give up on their dreams.

“From the outside, you might think it is easy and then you are in it and it feels like it is the hardest thing, but it is all worth it.

“Producing can test you but if you are passionate about the film-making industry, don’t give up.

“Try to have an open mind and adopt a learning attitude.”
