What the stars say on the CAA
◆ Actor Rajinikanth: “I am willing to play any role in order to maintain peace in the country. I too agree with their (Muslim leaders) comment that a country’s prime objective should be love, unity and peace.” Hindustantimes.com reported that last week, Rajinikanth condemned both the ruling party in India and the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the violence in Delhi, saying it was “equally responsible for letting the situation worsen in the capital”.
◆ In January, Deepika Padukone made an unexpected appearance at a silent protest at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University and displayed solidarity with the student who was allegedly attacked by right-wing groups. Her movie Chhappak was due to be released around the time and many boycotted the film.
◆ Director Anurag Kashyap was one of the first to speak against the Act when he Tweeted: “... Pro-CAA means Anti-Muslim and nothing else”. ◆ Gulfnews.com recently called out major film stars for keeping mum on the situation. “...when will those revered Bollywood superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ranveer Singh – who play indestructible heroes with heightened moral radars on the big screen – grow a spine and speak up on issues that are tearing the social fabric of India?”, it reported.
