Don’t criticise, talk Hindi
THE letter “Hindvani chose to segregate” (the POST, February 26 – March 1) refers.
It is no doubt that Radio Hindvani drew the greatest inspiration from Radio Phoenix.
Since its first 30-day broadcast in 1998, Radio Phoenix was already a powerhouse in KZN with over 150 000 listeners migrating to them due to their alternative style of radio.
However, Hindvani’s hierarchy chose to criticise the operations of Radio Phoenix rather than focus on their objective of promoting and teaching the Hindi language.
Hindvani’s rise in listenership is only through default as the demoralisation of Lotus FM resulted in listeners migrating to them – not by choice but there was no alternative.
Listening to Radio Hindvani is like being at a restaurant and ordering seafood prawns and receiving soya prawns.
Charity should begin at home. Instruct the announcers to learn and talk in Hindi on-air, then the listeners and community at large.
