Unhealthy culture of violence at universities
THE column “Short circuit short cut to anarchy” (the POST, February 26 – March 1) by Kiru Naidoo was excellent.
I am shocked by the violence that is escalating at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, especially during this time of the year.
When will this madness stop with this type of behaviour?
This is an unhealthy culture of disrespect that is plaguing our university.
While the right to demonstrate is entrenched in our country’s constitution, acts of criminality and damaging of university property is unacceptable, and these perpetrators must face the full might of the law.
I am always under the impression that education is to empower students to lead better lives, serve their communities and make the world a better place to live.
But with this type of behaviour, it is corrupting and polluting the minds of the future generation.
How are we going to rely on our future generation if this type of rampage is a common occurrence?
These protests are providing a fertile ground for an uprising and, to me, this is a start.
The founding fathers of our country and the principles of Madiba’s legacy seem to have been thrown out of the window.
I appeal to lecturers, stop compromising our educational value system, stand tall and make decisions for what is right without fear.
