Getting HOOKED

-

THE shad season has come to a close but the other fish have made up for the loss. Congratulations to our biggest shad competition winners and to all those who weighed fish in.

The offshore seasons are changing and the summer fish are starting to make an appearance.

The dorado and sailfish are making it on to the catch reports from both charters and recreational anglers.

The sea conditions have, however, been far from ideal with plenty of very bumpy days. Luckily we are almost out of the windy months so we should be able to predict the conditions a bit further in advance.

The rock and surf fishing is starting to heat up with more summer fish being landed in the past week.

Well done to our biggest shad competition winners: Pragasen Thaver (1st, 6.26kg), Antonio JeanPierre (2nd, 5.77kg) and Riad Azeez (3rd, 5.13kg).

The blue skates have been quenching the thirst for summer fish. These feisty flatfish are great fun on a Saltist medium rod (3-5oz) with 20-30lb Daiwa J braid and a Daiwa BG 5000 size reel.

This medium-light angling is addictive!

The shad season has been very productive and some true giants were landed. Let us hope everyone leaves them to breed so we can have another great season once the season opens on December 1.

There have been a lot of garrick landed in the last couple of weeks with some big specimens making it to the side.

Find a spot that has deep water close by and don’t fall into the habit of throwing too far. Garrick feed a lot closer than most people think.

The garrick have also been around the South Coast. Winklespruit has been the place to go to target these gentlemen.

The one lure that has outdone all others is the Mustad bucktail.

The jigging action of this fairly simple lead head with fur is irresistible to garrick. The key is working the bucktail in a long whipping action but allowing it to fall between whips. Colour is simple – chartreuse and white.

The brusher are still around with some proper fish being landed this season. Crabs have been the best bait hands down.

The latest series of Hier Gaan Ons Alweer (series 19) with Petri de Wet premiered on Monday at 5.30pm on kykNet, channel 144. There are a number of repeats during the week: Tuesday at 9.30am, Wednesday at 10am, Thursday at 10.30am and Friday at 2.30pm. Series 19 runs for three months, ending on Monday, December 28.

Petri and his guests cover various angling styles (fresh and salt water) around Southern Africa, but with the Covid-19 pandemic taking over and putting a damper on travel, this year’s focus is on fishing in South Africa.

Tight lines and screaming reels!
