Moyes gets ‘Hammered’ by fans

- ESHLIN VEDAN

THE past matchday was arguably one of the most surprising in Premier League history. In a rare coincidence, arch rivals Manchester United and Liverpool both experienced thrashings by five-goal margins in their respective games on Sunday.

United’s defence was again exposed as they were punished 6-1 by Tottenham Hotspur. The only thing which the Red Devils had to celebrate in the game was the fact that they took the lead through a Bruno Fernandes penalty.

With the score 4-1 at half-time, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already conceded defeat as he had substituted Bruno with the more defensive Fred.

Had Aston Villa and particularly Ross Barkley had more luck on the day, the Villains could have scored more than 10 goals against Liverpool.

Everton and Villa are the only teams with 100% win records. Carlo Ancelotti’s

Everton defeated Brighton and Hove Albion 4-2.

James Rodriguez continued his good form with a brace as did striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who opened the scoring to take his tally for the Premier League season to six goals.

The Toffees are gelling well under Ancelotti, and with the addition of Rodriguez in midfield. They will face an interesting battle after the international break when they square off against city rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Leicester City experienced their first defeat of the season as they were outplayed 3-0 by West Ham United. Hammers boss David Moyes though cannot seem to win over the public.

The Scot has not been on the field for West Ham’s last three games owing to a positive Covid-19 test. This coincided with their league wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester.

Some have questioned whether the Hammers’ sudden upturn in form is because of Moyes’ absence from the touchline, and suggested that he should be the club’s virtual manager from now on.

Manchester City’s frustration continued as they played out to a 1-1 draw against Leeds United.

The Cityzens dominated the early proceedings, but Marcelo Bielsa’s side showed tremendous fighting ability to equalise through Rodrigo in the 59th minute.

Leeds are looking at home in the Premier League so far this season.

The same cannot be said for the other two promoted teams, West Bromwich Albion and Fulham, who have picked up just one point so far collectively.

Interestingly, the bottom three clubs Burnley, Sheffield United and Fulham, have lost all their games so far.

There will be no league action this weekend owing to the international break.
