Celebrate Maharaj’s achievements
IT IS said everybody is born with a gift, but to cricketer Keshav Maharaj it comes naturally.
He has become the second South African to pick up a hat trick in a Test match. With a devastating five-minute period and the first in more than 60 years to take a Test hat trick, he has now etched himself in the cricket record books. Congratulations and well done.
Let us celebrate his achievements. For far too long our cricket administrators have been resting on their laurels and engaged in a power struggle.
Now is the time for these administrators to pay attention to sports development at school and club level. Hopefully, with the new board of directors, they will regain the public’s trust and rebuild the confidence of players, sponsors and the media.
Greater resources are needed at a level at which our children can be nurtured and motivated to excel from an early age. We will then have more
Makhaya Ntinis and Keshav Maharajs emerging at the national level, and we will win regularly. Let us not forget and acknowledge Maharaj's parents, Athma and Usha, who made great sacrifices. Let them enjoy the proud moment.
The Proteas have been on the receiving end of difficulties for far too long. They have now turned the corner, blending well. Hopefully, they will not be affected by politics in the near future. We should be back where we belong as leaders in the cricket world.
