Love for beauty brought us together

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH charlene.somduth@inl.co.za SAURAV SILOCHAN AND JESSICA MATHER

SAURAV Silochan and Jessica Mather’s love for make-up drew them together. They became friends three years ago while working at a beauty store.

Silochan, 23, a beauty consultant, of Morningside, said the store wanted to employ someone new.

“Jessica’s one-page application was among the piles of CVs that I had to go through. I read it and thought this girl seemed cool and interesting. She was called in for an interview and got the job.”

Silochan said he was drawn to her energy.

“She is compassionate and easy to talk to. We worked together for two years until she started her own spiritual store, selling crystals among other items.

“When I don’t feel my best, she drops everything to be by my side. I am gay and I found myself easily opening up to her with what I was going through in my life.

“I loved that she never judged me but always listened to me.”

He said in a world where there was hate and fake people, he appreciated Mather for her ability to keep things real with him.

“She is a straight talker. I realised the depths of our friendship when my mom contracted Covid-19 and was admitted to hospital. Jessica was with me every step of the way.”

Silochan said race or colour did not exist in their friendship.

“We see each other for who we are. She is accepting of my beliefs and loves to learn about Hinduism. I often find myself teaching her about the Hindu faith and our traditions.

“We are also in and out of each other’s houses. We have attended family weddings and birthday parties. Jessica and I have found a place in each other’s families.“

Mather, 23, said she knew they were going to be best friends when they met.

“Working and interacting with him showed me that he was this sensitive soft soul.

“He has this beautiful and warm energy that I was drawn to. At first, he was guarded.

“I had to work to gain his trust and earn his love. I knew he had a good heart and I continued to pursue a friendship with him.

“I believe that showing love to anybody will help resolve a lot of issues,” said Mather.

“We must learn to find common ground rather than look at differences.”

The friends said they enjoyed going out for coffee, trying new restaurants, trips to the beach and road trips to the Drakensberg.
