Tutu the greatest man of God

-

BORN in 1931, in the town of Klerksdorp, was Desmond Mpilo Tutu, who was to become one of the greatest men of God and a human rights activist who fought for the demise of the apartheid regime and until now was fighting for the demise of the ANC. Tutu stood firmly against corruption and his passion was to uplift the poor, and under-privileged citizens of our country.

Most of the tributes at his funeral described him as a simple and humble man of this country who never had a materialistic bone in his body. Suffice to say that he requested the cheapest coffin for his funeral.

Tutu saw everyone as equal and stood for humanity first, above religion and politics, and it was during our first democratic elections in 1994 when he coined the term “A Rainbow Nation” in which all citizens were South Africans first before race and religion.

Tutu was a selfless soul whereby he placed high values of morals and integrity in his daily life, and he even preached these characteristics to everyone, including politicians and government, but it seems it fell on deaf ears, especially with our current government.

Tutu knew the only way to bring service delivery back to its people and to reduce poverty and inequality was to have a corruption-free government.

He fought against the apartheid government, and now he was fighting against the current ANC government. During one of his last press interviews, Tutu stated: “Our government is worse than the apartheid government because at least you were expecting it from the apartheid government.”

Tutu went on to say: “We were expecting we would have a government that was sensitive to the sentiments of our Constitution. The trouble is that the ANC, on the whole, reckons that the freedom that we enjoy is due to them. They reckon everyone else is just a sideline.

“We will pray as we prayed for the downfall of the apartheid government; we will pray for the downfall of a government that misrepresents us. I am warning you out of love. I am warning you, like I warned the Nationalists, that one day we will start praying for the defeat of the ANC government. You are disgraceful.”

It is clearly evident that Archbishop Desmond Tutu died a broken man because the ANC government, which failed to deliver to the poorest of the poor, had let him down. Tutu gave his life to the Struggle in uplifting the masses of this country but was let down and betrayed by the ANC government that he fought for.
